Quang Ninh authorities suspend ship service after fire in Ha Long Bay

People’s Committee in the northern province of Quang Ninh yesterday decided to suspend a local firm from operating its tourism boats in the province’s iconic Ha Long Bay in the wake of a fire on a cruise ship carrying many visitors on February 13.

The local administration asked the firefighting station to liaise with relevant agencies to carry out a probe of the fire cause in cruise ship Bhaya Legend. Only when the inspection result is submitted to the local administration, the cruise ship can be allowed to operate again.

Before, the cruise ship Bhaya QN 2071 of the Bhaya Legend Company was being anchored in Cua Van fishing village, another major village located in the UNESCO-recognized bay, when a fire suddenly broke out aboard. Crewmen managed to rescue passengers including five foreigners and two Vietnamese and their property to safer shelters and put out the fire.

The wooden ship was made in 2003 and converted into cruise ship in 2012.
