Shops Harm Hoi An’s Heritage

Even as a world heritage site, Hoi An’s landscape and general environment have been threatened by the disorderliness of densely packed businesses and services which have ignored the preservation rules set out to protect the ancient city, explained Ho Thi Thanh Lam, Deputy Chairwomen for the People’s Committee of Quang Nam Province.

With more than 3,196 private shops and businesses crammed into the inner town, the only reasonable means to preservation and restoration would be to quickly relocate the vast majority of local establishments.

However, the relocation must be carried out following criteria centered on protecting the landscape, preserving heritage pieces, incorporating fire regulations, as well as limiting pollution, vibrations and noise. These services will have to be slowly removed from Hoi An piece by piece.
